Bad News Season Gets Worse
After a pre-trial diversion made it look like Maurice Purify’s legal problems might go away, the troubled wideout now has been charged with driving while intoxicated. The charge will likely render Purify ineligible to complete the diversion from his earlier assault charges, which mean he might very well end up being prosecuted and perhaps even serve jail time.
While the news is bad for Purify, it’s also bad news for a Husker team that needs to gel in time for some big non-conference games against Wake Forest and USC. Also of concern are October games at Missouri, against Oklahoma State and Texas A&M in Lincoln, and at Texas. Purify seemed to be a vital weapon for all of those contests and now his status for every one of them is in some doubt.
Also, of concern is the idea that Purify still doesn’t “get it”. Whether it’s packing on weight at the end of Nebraska’s regular season or his brushes with the law, Purify has now shown a pattern of bad judgment and worse, he doesn’t seem to be learning from his mistake. Someone needs to help Maurice understand that every one of these things is costing him money. While he looked like an NFL talent, every incident diminishes his market value.
You hope Purify doesn’t become the new Lawrence Phillips, a player who got on such a roll of lawlessness, he’s never seemed able to recover and get his life back on track. It’s disappointing for Nebraska’s 2007 season, and for Mo’ it’s just plain sad.
Update: Purify has been suspended from the team indefinitely.

I just don't get it. In some ways I feel bad for Mo...but then other times... I really hope and pray that we (NU and Husker Nation) just don't thow him aside; that if there is someone out there that can reach out to him and give him some wise counsel and help. It is sad for the program yes, but we are talking about the potential train wreck of a fellow man and that is saddening. Get better Mo.

Oh come on a potential train wreck of a fellow man? the dude was in a bar fight, that stuff happens. He's 21 so he's definatly allowed to drink, he got 1 DUI it's not a felony. No he shouldn't have been driving. but come on it's just beer and he wasn't that far over the limit. Nebraska's alcohol laws suck anyway way to low when compared to other states.
In any case I think callahan definatly overdid it with kicking him off of the team for at least this season. If we lose to USC this year I'm calling for Callahan's Head. and will be starting a petition for not only him but for steve pederson as well.
There goes another season. Great another year of waiting.

Mo gets arrested twice and you're calling for Callahan's head?? The guy broke the law...deal with it. We can win games without this guy. If he is serious about being on this team he'll get this figured out. If not, he can pack his bags for all I care. I hope for his sake he gets his personal life fixed first and foremost. Things will fall into place after that. I say Kudos to Callahan for suspending him in the first place. Not all coaches would do that to a top 5 player.

Sorry Hater....but the reality of it is there are things bigger than the program. This young man has some issues and they are leading him down a dangerous path. Go ahead and start your petitions...I am sure they will do a lot of good. Enjoy yourself.

I supported Purify after his first run-in with the law, thinking it might have just been a good person doing a stupid thing. After this latest incident--just five weeks later--I am just mad at him for being so foolish with his life, and I don't feel sorry for him. He was on thin ice and very fortunate to get a second chance, and then just days later he shows what he learned by...drinking again and driving home?!?
It is apparent he is a problem drinker and I hope he gets some help and gets his life back on track. I hope he finishes college and gets a stable career somewhere. I don't want him on the team anymore though. He just seems like a time bomb and his judgment straight-up sucks.
Good luck to him, but I am placing my hopes in Holt, Henry, Peterson, and the other guys who the team can count on.

ss, are you for real? Just a bar fight, the guy tried to get a minor in to a club then the next weak found this guy, confronted him for doing the right thing and his job, assaulted him and his girlfriend, then wouldn't leave the bar broke back in to assault the guy again and resisted arrest thats a little more than a bar fight jack-ass. Then you blame nebraskas alcohol law for the dui, nice, you sound about as smart as he is.

STEVE: a bar fight/DUI are a far cry from hitting a woman with a phonebook and dragging her down a flight of stairs. other than that, i agree with everything.
SS: MP's not necessarily off the team for the year, he's merely suspended indefinitely. i'd be surprised if he's not on the field for the USC game.
62-36: it's not that rare for someone to try to get an underage friend into a club/bar, don't make a capital case out of it. as for the fight, if it was truly that bad MP would not have been eligible for pre-trial diversion.

Strike two...three strikes and you're out, Mr. MO.
I tried to give him the benefit of the doubt after the bar fight, but this additional DUI thing pretty much puts him over the top, IMO.
Doesn't look like he has a clue, and isn't going to get one anytime soon.
I commend Callahan for suspending him. If Mo does happen to find his way back on the field for NE, it will be anticlimatic to say the least; too little too late.
He's bad for team chemistry and national PR at this point. Plus he's wasting everybody's energy and time.
Others will step up and either Holt, Henry, or Brooks might prove to have some of the similar talents for endzone catches as MO. I'm not a huge fan of the endzone fade route anyway.
Keller will bring all our our receivers to another level of proficiency.
It is an unfortunate situation Mo has created for himself, but I don't feel sorry for him.

Apparently logic is long gone now (I'm looking at you ss) when it comes to this topic. Indefinite suspension is clearly the right answer in this case. Let the facts play out, see what the legal ramifications will be, have a team leadership meeting to discuss it, and when everything is on the table, hand out punishment.
Callahan must set a precedent with this case. This sort of thing can't be condoned. Not the drinking, the driving.
All he needs to do when leaving the bar is say this, "Hello fellow bar patrons. In case you didn't know, my name is Husker Hero Mo Purify. You may know me from such on-field exploits as a 60 plus yard score versus UT. Or the game winning fade pattern grab versus aTm. Or such off-field adventures as a bar fight and resisted arrest. I care not to further jeopardize my now-tarnished reputation and potential for million dollar signing bonuses by messing up again. May I please have a ride?" Anyone would oblige.
He drove. He was arrested. He was stupid, and should be off the team.

Hey 62-36....it isn't w-e-a-k. The correct way is w-e-e-k. Thank you for showing us what it is like to be smart.
OU7times Jun 14 07
Maurice Purify is certainly a CLOWN who puts his exploits above the university. If this guy is allowed back it will show the world that coach has put winning above doing "the right thing". I truly expect to see MO back. This will just be another fundamental football error that we've come to expect from "coach" Callahan. Kind of like running a fake punt (like Auburn didn't know that was coming)deep in Auburn territory. There is no reason to believe that Callahan has learned any lessons about taking chances on and off the field yet. I think the buzz around campus this year should be "is our team fundamentally sound"?

Oh, hi OU7times,
I'm glad your brand of Sooner smack comes around BRN. Glad our little dust-em-up leading up to and following the title game didn't run you off. Honestly, drop by often. Okay?
Because, seriously, no discussion of Purify would be complete without an unneeded reference to the AU game and a cheap shot at our coach. Great stuff...really on point.
What's the 7 times stand for? NCAA violations??
Come on, you had to know that was coming.
Scott Jun 14 07
I know a lot of people that have been given 2nd and even 3rd chances....and no, I don't mean members of the NU football team. When given those chances they made the most of their lives and are back on the right track.
The bottom line is that it is NOT our decision. And since we are talking about play calling on the field, how many times did we hear complaining about the Osborne play calling before he won a national championship? Please learn to separate the two as they don't need to be linked together.
Whatever Coach Callahan decides with Mo, I'll respect that decision as should everyone else, regardless of whether you think it was the right one or not.
OU7times Jun 14 07
Hey Darren, you know that I could never miss a chance to get my 2 cents in on coach "C". Seriously, I say I'm not a NU fan but I never miss a game (mostly), that NU plays on TV. That is if OU is not on. I do respect NU and their great tradition, though. Scott, I respect your opinion (and why not)on your team but please understand my view when I point out Callahan goofs. This all started with "F-N hilbillies" (nice first impression coach!)then the NU player,I believe was named Houston, who punched out the MU fan. Say what you may but the fact that students shouldn't be on the field hasn't any bearing on not handling the issue promptly and in my mind correctly. Hey, didn't that Houston guy end up getting booted later anyway for some inappropriate conduct? Coach's play calling is really very commical, at times, and I love to watch NU's games because of the fact. He started the smakdown and I'm just here to finish it. Please do not misunderstand me because NU fans have never been anything short of nice to me and I love the stadium, tradition, etc. I promise to stay tuned to BRN and voice my opinion and most of all be as respectful as possible while doing so. I also will be the first to admit when my team goofs up. Deal? LET THE GAMES BEGIN!
Scott Jun 15 07
So Houston got caught with a little pot....I'm guessing he had a sore hammy and was using it for medicinal purposes. And what's the big deal about the hillbillies comment? I mean, what else is there in Oklahoma? It could have been worse....he could be getting paid for doing nothing (wink, wink).
Okay, hopefully you'll know that the above comments are sarcasm at it's finest and you make a great point there OU7times. I think Coach Callahan needed a history lesson about the OU-NU series so he could understand that these are the two most football savvy fan bases in the nation with the most loyal fans.
If Coach Callahan's gig doesn't pan out maybe he could dye his hair blond, cut it like a mohawk, shave some lines in the side of it, put colors in those lines, and begin an acting career. It's not like it's been done before. Oh wait.....
darren Jun 15 07
Deal, OU7times. Deal.
We'll keep sharing mutual respect all the way to San Antonio, okay? Maybe we can renew our quasi-friendly shouting matches over a drink along the River walk.
I'd still like nothing more than OU and NU to revive our yearly games via constant title-game qualification.
OU7times Jun 15 07
Just wanted to drop a line back at you guys and say that Phil Steele's football annual is out. I say that but you may have been like me and been standing at the magazine rack waiting for all of the college football mags to arrive.I can almost smell college football in the air! This guy is uncanny with his predictions. Check him out.
Steve Jun 15 07
Steele's got a good track record in recent years nationally, but the consensus pick (across all of the magazines) has been superior to Steele in picking the Big 12 North champ. Not that the consensus always gets it right, but Steele's never correctly picked a North champion that the consensus didn't also pick. But the consensus got it right when Steele got it wrong in 1998, 2002, and 2003.
So if the choice is being Steele's pick (Missouri) or the consensus pick (which appears to be Nebraska), I'd rather be the consensus pick. Because at least in the Big 12 North, the consensus is usually right.

hey Darren, after reading one of your last posts I was thinking of changing my screen name to "47straight". What do you think? Now, you had to know that was coming. Heh,heh.
