Upon Further Review, Part 1
Big Red Network owner Jason Siffring surprised me with a DVD of recruiting videos of the class of 2007. In many ways we’ve hashed through the class already, but I couldn’t help forming new impressions when I saw the video firsthand. Rather then do a complete data dump of all 28 class members, part one will include the 11 offensive players in the class and part two will include the defensive and special teams player (namely kicker Adi Kunalic). Keep in mind that these are highlight videos, so it’s hard not to come away with a lot of positives.
Running Backs
Quentin Castille (6’1” 234 lbs.) – Has good size and ran away from some people but was not overwhelmingly fast, seemed to run effortlessly even as he shed tacklers.
Roy Helu (5’11” 206 lbs.) – Was fast and shifty running the ball and cutback well, looked good as a return man too.
Marcus Mendoza (5’10” 175 lbs.) – Blew past people with his speed and he looked like a game-changer a la Reggie Bush, definitely no more than 175 pounds on film so like Bush would need his touches limited to stay healthy.
Offensive Linemen
Jaivorio Burkes (6’4” 310 lbs.) – Completely dominated opposing players, was serving up pancakes like Toniu Fonoti.
Marcel Jones (6’8” 300 lbs.) – Moves his feet like a tight end.
Aaron Schulte (6’6” 320 lbs.) – Moves better than you’d guess from his mugshot.
Tight End
Ryan Hill (6’3” 230 lbs.) – Caught a lot of deep balls, looked like more than a possession receiver.
Wide Receiver
Curenski Gilleylen (6’0” 210 lbs.) – Was a running back in high school and looked like a Division I running back with the ball in his hands. A very solid build, this guy will get yards after the catch and could probably become the Husker I-back if called upon.
Niles Paul (6’1” 200 lbs.) – Was simply a man among boys, he was bigger, stronger, faster than everyone that tried to cover him or catch him, he could help in the return game.
Quarterback
Zac Lee (6’2” 200 lbs.) – Was scrambling in every clip so got no sense of what he could do in the pocket, showed poise but somewhat limited range throwing on the run, repeatedly turned broken plays into positive gains.
Patrick Witt (6’4” 215 lbs.) – Looked excellent in the pocket firing strikes way down the field, all of the raw material is there.
