Huskers to Administer Sun Belt Beatings in 2009

by

The Huskers finalized their 2009 Schedule last week:

09/05 Fla. Atlantic
09/12 Louisiana-Lafayette
09/19 @Virginia Tech
09/26 Arkansas State
10/03 @Missouri
10/17 Texas Tech
10/24 Iowa State
10/31 @Baylor
11/07 Oklahoma
11/14 @Kansas
11/21 Kansas State
11/27 @Colorado

Nebraska’s 2009 non-conference schedule includes three home dates against teams from the Sun Belt Conference (which is reportedly considering a name change to the “Will Work For Food Conference). Hey, at least they are Division I-A schools. The Huskers will have to travel to Blacksburg in 2009 to face Virginia Tech, so any thought that their out-of-conference games will all be easy would be inaccurate. Fortunately, that’s the kind of early season game that a team could lose and still contend for a national title.

The bye week comes in the middle of the Huskers’ season (just after a road trip to Missouri) which is an improvement over the 11-game gauntlets the Huskers have had to run 2006-2008. It also works out nicely that the Huskers never have to play in any back-to-back road contests. The only major downer from a competitive standpoint is that Nebraska will have a short week before travelling to Boulder to finish the regular season against Colorado just after Thanksgiving.

Virginia Tech, Oklahoma, and a Big 12 title opponent should give NU enough strength of schedule to mount a title run (if the Huskers are good enough). If not, there are enough soft patches between the Sun Belt and the Big 12 bottom feeders to become bowl-eligible. Not the most exciting schedule we’ve seen, but it’s crafted nicely enough that the Huskers should have a good chance to avoid stumbles due to scheduling (Colorado the only real possible exception).
