2008 Schedule is Just Right
If you haven’t heard, Nebraska’s 2008 schedule has been finalized and will look like this:
09/06 San Jose State
09/13 New Mexico St.
09/20 Virginia Tech
09/27 Western Michigan
10/04 Missouri
10/11 @Texas Tech
10/18 @Iowa State
10/25 Baylor
11/01 @Oklahoma
11/08 Kansas
11/15 @Kansas State
11/28 Colorado
The Huskers will open with four straight home games (which may be helpful with them likely breaking in a new quarterback after Sam Keller departs). Included in the opening batch will be tough games against Virginia Tech and Missouri (where Husker fans will ask “Will Chase Daniel ever graduate?).
The Huskers will then hit the road to right past wrongs against Texas Tech and keep things right against Iowa State. Then will be a home date with Baylor before heading back to Norman (where a warm welcome will await Bill Callahan, no doubt). The Huskers will return home from what may be the toughest game of the season at Oklahoma to face Kansas in Lincoln. The Huskers will play their 11th game in a row in Manhattan before finally getting a bye before their home date against Colorado. If all goes well then the Huskers would have just over a week following the Colorado game to prepare for the Big 12 title game.
If the Huskers need “quality wins to bulk up their strength of schedule for a title run, they’ll have have them in the form of Va. Tech, OU, the Big 12 title opponent, and maybe Texas Tech or Missouri as well. With eight home games, it’s sure to be a good year for the Big Red bank account. And with three fairly slam dunk out-of-conference wins (all Division I-A), the Huskers need only go 3-5 in the Big 12 to be bowl-eligible (ISU, Baylor, and KU could pretty easily serve up three wins). Not that anyone’s expecting 6-6, but after the 2004 season you can’t assume anything.
No, the non-conference schedule is not going to win the Huskers any medals of valor. But it’s the right schedule for a team that might have the pieces for a national title run or that endures some growing pains with a new quarterback.

Hopefully the growing pains aren't as bad as we fear.....after all, we should have a decent QB situation next year, with Ganz coming back to compete with Zack Lee and Patrick Witt...

Too many patsys and '09 will be more of the same as we are treated to 3 Sun Belt teams--WOOHOO!
'07 is a great sched. as it turns out, but I could live w/o the BALLS St. game.
Burnt on this topic though as it has been flogged to death on another website.

Byes, appear to be a thing of the past, before conference play. Too bad. Starting the last week in August would remedy that, but for some reason, it's against NCAA rules. Which means an almost NFL type grind (and they get byes.)
How strong is Callahan's position, is the issue to me, after this season. He's quoted as "wanting to be able to stay." Being "locked in" with a satisfactory contract is what I'm looking for. But, this season will reveal much, in that regard.
