We May Never See Best of Bowman

243641m.jpg Nebraska cornerback Zack Bowman's recent knee injury will keep him out of football until the fall. Because of the severity of the injury, it's easy to believe he won't truly be 100% at any time during the 2007 season. But given Nebraska's needs and Bowman's likely desires, he probably will play in the fall at less than 100%.

While that may be the best outcome at this point for all involved, it still stings a bit. Draft guru Mel Kiper Jr. had touted Bowman as a likely first round draft pick going into the 2006 season. Now Bowman's chances of really standing out in 2007 seem greatly reduced.

It's sort of deja vu. Before NU tight end Matt Herian sustained injuries that cost him half of the 2004 season and all of the 2005 season, he seemed destined for stardom at the college level. Instead, Herian had a fairly bland 2006 season and is now working to find an NFL team that might give him a contract.

NU fans never really got to see Herian achieve his potential at Nebraska and it seems the same will be true of Bowman. It just highlights why depth is so essential. Cases like those of Herian and Bowman are hardly rare. Theyre' all too common. It underscores why the "student" part of "student-athlete" is so important. If gridiron dreams don't come true, at least a degree offers hope of living the American dream.

Sad but true about Bowman. It seems the best we can expect out of him in '07 is the same we saw in '05...a late season coming out party.

Alackaday, this time around it will be his Husker curtain call.

Nevertheless, if he can help the Blackshirts during whichever bowl the Corn goes to as much he did in San Antonio, it would all be worth it.

That pick in the endzone over Manningham? Curses that was sweet!

ASIDE COMMENT:

Sorry gents, wanted to e-mail BRN staff directly, but couldn't figure it out.

I like what I'm seeing on this site: the writing/commentary is very good and there seems to be a creative vibe going on!

I would post over here more frequently, but would like to do 'real time' exchanges; the lag time here just doesn't work for me.

So, staff, are you--and WHEN--going to get this thing up and running for 'real time'?

Let me know. THANKS!

Mr. Blang, :)

Thanks for the feedback!

Right now, we manually approve every comment. If we didn't, you'd see a bunch of spam comments trying to sell you male-enhancement medication. We thought it would be better to keep the comments spam-free at the expense of real-time comment approval. I'd say most comments get approved within an hour, but I hear what you're saying.

We're working on some improvements that I think you and all the other frequent commenters will appreciate.

And if you or anyone else has ideas on things they'd like to see improved, email me at jason@bigrednetwork.com. (Also, there is a feedback@bigrednetwork.com address listed at the bottom of every page.)

Thanks again! Keep the comments coming!

In explanation of my fake name: translation; 'it is a bling thing'. Symbolic on a number of levels, but mainly in reference to U.S. consumer culture at large, and, specifically, what has become of pro--and college--sports, the economics thereof. It's all about the 'bling'

Also is a play on hiphop/rap subculture--speak, a subculture which supplies a large proportion of athletes into said sports.

Does that make any sense?
