They Can't All Be Easy

Nebraska's schedule in 2007 will be no cakewalk. Sure, there are some games in which Nebraska will come in a heavy favorite, but there's no "North Texas" on the slate like there was in 1993. For the most part, the Huskers will have to earn their win-loss record. Here then are how I'd rank each of Nebraska's 2007 regular season games by degree of difficulty.

1. @ Texas - Horns sure to be ready after 2006 escape and the Huskers can expect no breaks from the refs

2. USC - Thank goodness it's in Lincoln, let's hope it's a night game

3. @ Missouri - It may become the most important game in Missouri in well over 30 years, the Tigers will be amped

4. Texas A&M - The Aggies were 4-0 in conference road games last year

5. Oklahoma State - Bobby Reid will be back, and he killed NU a year ago

6. @ Wake - Their small stadium gives them little advantage but they return their quarterback

7. @ Colorado - Expect CU to be better, they'll also have a bye week to prepare and they hate Nebraska

8. Kansas State - They showed some firepower in beating Texas, but the crowd should be cruel to Freeman

9. @ Kansas - They Jayhawks look to extend their win streak versus NU in Lawrence to two games

10. Nevada - A bowl team in 2006

11. Ball State - Gave Michigan a scare in 2006

12. Iowa State - Scares nobody in 2007

No question, that's a tough schedule. No bye, before conference competition and none until the week before Buffy, either. Even a "Grinder", would say, "that's a grind!"
From Mizzou on, one battle after another. But line depth, on both sides, if not overall talent, will surely have improved, from last year. I think team speed will have improved too, if for no other reason than defenders in the back 7, making decisive reads and hits.
The offense will be a smoother ride, with more "horse power" and a more consistent "home run" threat.
Will there be the "big win" this year? Maybe not. But I think this team is past the "dramatic upset" stage, which will signify another step of improvement.
