Recruiting Tidbits

I've milked the 2007 recruiting season for about every angle that could be of interest to a Husker fan. It is the offseason after all. Still there are few items of interest to Husker fans.

First the bad news. It's rumored that one or more of the defensive lineman Nebraska recruited may not be eligible in 2007. That's a tough pill to swallow with four starters to replace and a need for another four quality back-ups to rotate in. Sure, guys like Ndamukong Suh and Barry Turner cushion the losses a bit, but Nebraska really needs all of their junior college talent to be ready to contribute (Brandon Johnson from a year ago, and Joseph Townsend, Shukree Barfield and Kevin Dixon this year). There are other options already on campus, but you can never have enough quality depth on the defensive line.

Now the good news. All-world running back prospect Noel Devine did not sign a letter of intent and will go the prep school route to become eligible for 2008. Devine had included Nebraska among possible options in 2007 so that might give them a leg up in recruiting him for 2008. I imagine it would help greatly for the Huskers to have a big season this year. If the Huskers could pull off a conference championship, it might sway Devine to come to Lincoln. You'd imagine he's also taken note of the wave of injuries afflicting Nebraska running backs that could spell opportunities for early playing time.

I don't think NU really needs a kid like Devine. He might be an all world talent, but I also heard he was an all world A__. We should really take the so called Wake Forrest route here and recruit players that are more suited to be at NU.

Who is Noel Devine? I have not heard of him before. Any stories on him in the net? If he has the personality of a Lawrence Phillips, then I agree that the Huskers are better off without him.

Hi Bob,

Devine is a running back and was one of the top ten recruits in the country. He was said to have Nebraska on his short list of schools. It was looking unlikely that he would qualify which is why he didn't sign on signing day. However, I've heard reports that he's now headed to West Virginia. I don't know if that means he's got his grades fixed or just that he said he'd go there after he qualified. In any case, he's supposed to be an amazing talent.
