Four-way QB Competition, Two-man Race at Best

by

Barring a rash of injuries at quarterback, we won't see Beau Davis as NU's next starting quarterback. Forget what we hear about equal snaps for four guys. It's not gonna happen.

snipshot_d477oqlb01i.jpg It would be pretty shocking to see Patrick Witt win the job either. He's too new, too young, and has a redshirt year to burn. Joe Ganz is probably the best option in terms of knowledge of the offense, which is why you have to give him some chance to win the job. But athletically, none of these guys is ready to compete with Sam Keller, a player that a number of experts pegged as a future pro. Zac Lee might have made things interesting if not for a knee injury. But with a redshirt year to burn, you'd expect Lee to spend 2007 healing and learning before competing for the starting job in 2008.

It's possible that Ganz could win the job in the spring based on his experience, only to be overtaken in the fall by Keller once Keller's had the summer to further study the offense. But to dress this up as anything other than a two-man contest is a stretch. Most believe Keller all but owns the starting job for next season.

So the coaches can even up the snaps this spring in the interests of fairness, but Husker fans won't be fooled. In 2007, the two-deep at quarterback will list Keller and Ganz probably in that order.
