Allen Fills Out
Pierre Allen stood out from other members of Nebraska's 2006 recruiting class in a few ways. First, in addition to him being projected as a defensive end or tight end, there was some thought that he might become a wide receiver. Not since linebacker Randy Stella was returning kicks did Nebraska have quite such a versatile athlete. Allen also was twice the MVP in leading his team to a state basketball title and his explosive leaping ability was evident as he lead Colorado's class 4A in rebounding and blocked shots.
But coming in at a mere 225 pounds, it was clear that Allen would need to develop a great deal physically in order to contribute as an end. After only one redshirt season, Allen appears ready as he added fifty pounds before trimming down to around 265. Among defensive ends participating this spring, that puts him second only to projected starter Zach Potter in terms of weight which is why he's likely to see time at the larger base defensive end spot. (It should also be noted that 2006 recruit Ben Martin has grown to 270, but Martin is now listed as a defensive tackle).
Potter turned some heads with some critical plays on special teams in 2005, but in the 2006 campaign he didn't make a lot of noise playing behind Adam Carriker. Potter should have the inside track to a starting job, but it seems very likely that Allen will emerge as the top backup at base end and as such would see playing time in every game. Most of Nebraska's other options would either be newcomers in the fall, walk-ons or players that are now practicing at other spots (like open end or defensive tackle).
So Allen not only has filled out physically, but chances are he'll be needed to fill out the defensive end rotation. An injury to Potter (or perhaps some standout spring and fall performances) could thrust Allen into the role of starter. That makes Allen a pretty important player to watch this spring.

Thats great!
Young player- reshirt frosh, and not from the '05 recruiting class (not that there was anything wrong with that). The newer talent is starting to trickle in. Fresh attitude, renewed "Husker Power" ethic. Maybe hungry for big results, too?
