The Hits Just Keep On Coming

Today is another big day for NU recruiting, particularly when it comes to junior college players. Today's the first day JC players can sign letters of intent. So, that has spurred decisions from two more top-notch players to choose NU - both at "need" positions for next year. Four-star safety prospect Larry Asante and three-star defensive tackle Shukree Barfield have both signed with NU.

Asante should be able to compete immediately for playing time at safety with the departure of Andrew Shanle. He chose NU over Big 12 foe Kansas State, and notable programs like Arkansas and Clemson. Barfield will team with fellow JC defensive tackle Joseph Townsend to fill the vacancy created by the loss of NU's starting two defensive tackles. Barfield picked NU over schools that included Rutgers, Louisville, Arkansas and South Florida. Suffice to say, this shores up to major needs for NU on the defensive side of the ball.

NU has two other junior college prospects - Zach Lee and Armando Murillo - who have signed or will sign letters of intent today too. High school players Patrick Witt and Marcus Mendoza have also signed their letters of intent because they play to enroll at NU in January after an early high school graduation. In total, that would give NU written commitments from six players today.

Those who were concerned by Callahan and his staff being too reliant on JC players at the start of their tenure, need to look at how they have refined this down since his first half-year (2004) and full year (2005) of commits. Now, the prudent use of JC players amounts to filling where they have obvious needs, and they do so with only top-drawer talent. They get the top 10-25 caliber players from the JC ranks. It is another example of fantastic execution by this staff.
