Thoughts on Texas A&M...WAY After the Fact

Big Red Network's loyal readers know my habit is to post my after-game thoughts Sunday or Monday morning at the very latest. This week - in the wake of NU's biggest win of the season, no less - my posting took a back seat to a number of things. They included: 1) A hangover. ("Honey, we won. Call the sitter. We're going out!") 2) Family obligations, hey new car seats don't exactly purchase themselves, and 3) actual work. I know you all love BRN. But, it's not exactly paying the bills. We bloggers have day jobs that sometimes interfere with our posting duties. Anyway, hopefully it is not too late to offer these thoughts on an enormous win for the Huskers. And, I'll try to keep from pounding home the same points you have no doubt read in the papers. That's just how BRN rolls.

About that drive - It was the stuff of legend. Taylor is just a blood and guts quarterback who will be missed next year. Purify is a freak of nature who will be awesome the rest of the year and next. But, most importantly, how about that catch by Erickson? Okay, seriously, the point is that a lot of things went in to that drive. Great, gutsy effort by the whole unit.

When Barry Turner blocked that field goal all of the usual suspects I had assembled in the den had a feeling NU could make a comeback. I don't think we were alone in that feeling. Husker fans around the country were holding out hope, I'm sure. And, I think 83,000 Aggies had that "Oh, crap, we left the barn door swinging wide open." feeling too.

I've re-watched the game and I can say that nearly every point scored by A&M can in some way be attributed to our safety play. Green and Shanle were either out of position or didn't make the play when they were in position. Seriously, I'm sure they are good kids who would do anything for the team. But, it's time to look at some other options at that spot. Where were Wilson and Culbert?

Todd Petersen straight up represented the 308 with his 7-catches, 82-yards and TD. He's a GICC Crusader. He has a big lance. I started to doubt him with that one dropped ball. But he showed walk-on pride in that last drive. 3-0-8, baby.

How bad did it suck to be an A&M fan this season? Sure, they won some close games...over Army. But, their three losses are by a TOTAL of 6 points, all in the conference, and all at home. Ouch. Losing at home close is a special and ugly kind of pain. In fact, the NU game felt like an absolute repeat of their loss to Texas Tech. Tech dominated early, A&M roared back to take the lead late, and Tech scored the deciding points with seconds to play. Sound familiar?

I know I'm a huge Husker homer. But, seriously, if you listened to the announcers on ABC, it was pretty obvious they were rooting for the home folks. I know it is hard not to get caught up in the environment, I'm sure. But they were shouting when A&M got a first down, and sounded downright disappointed when NU converted on 4th down at the end of the game. I miss Mike Tirico calling college games.

Could we hear a little more about Javorsky Lane, please? Yeah, he threw that (very poorly defended) pass and later scored from 12 inches outside the end zone. But, really, I've never heard more said about a back who got like 13 yards on 6 carries. I get that he is a freak of nature. But, Cody Glenn was clearly the better "power back" on Saturday. Because he can, you know, pick up his feet.

A&M fans look like dorks. There, I said it. Let the comments rain down on me. Any school where you get kissed after touchdowns must be full of nerds. You need the football team to help you out with the ladies? Really? Maybe it's the crew cuts on the corps of cadets. I don't know. They just seem like dorks. I know that is coming from a team whose mascot wears overalls and that has fans wearing corn cobs on their heads. I don't care. Let it rain...

Defensively, I'm running out of ways to think about this team. We look flat-out dominant at times in the first half, and then look like we can't tackle anybody in the second half. I will say what a blessing it is to have Steve Octavien and Corey McKeon back in the lineup. Young talented players like Suh and Turner have a chance to be downright special next year. NU just absolutely MUST get that backend fixed. And, please for the love of Pete, stop coaching kids to try and strip the ball. It isn't fundamentally sound because it attributes to poor tackling. Just hit them with your pads. Hit them hard, and the ball pops out.

Offensively, Taylor was Taylor - showing crazy guts after throwing a bad pick late in the game. I'm so glad he gets to hold some important records...at least for a while. Our offensive line full of sophomores is so much better at run blocking than pass blocking. That will need to come around for NU to be very good. Good to see Cody Glenn again. Lucky is a special talent. Purify could play on the basketball team. The tight ends all but disappeared.

Spinning it forward, I'm so glad NU finally gets a chance to rest for a week. Colorado will bring everything the can to Lincoln to try and bring meaning back to a dismal season. Thankfully, NU has some momentum, seniors who don't want to go out like that, and a coach who is very tough to beat with two weeks to prepare. Beat CU and get 9 wins. Regular-season wins going from 5 to 7 to 9 in three years looks like progress to me. Just beat CU, guys. Grind 'em up.

How crazy is it that NU clinched their division before Texas did? Nobody saw that one coming. While it almost makes me ill to say something positive for KSU, their win over Texas sent a statement and made a good day for the North even better. Colt McCoy would have beaten them, by the way. I'm just saying...

Nebraska - Champions, officially, for the first time since 1999. That feels darn good to write. I'm looking forward to a trip to Kansas City.

I agree green and shanle are our biggest weak spot. Most plays deep, shanle comes in a step late (back to the ball most of the time). Green on the other hand is not even in the TV screen on most shots. Husker hopes "Pruified" in 2006.

Aggie Nov 14 06

I had long thought that Nebraska fans were mature and good sports. I thank your posting for dissuading me my delusion. I now, almost, regret every "good game Huskers" I uttered to the Red wearing fans outside Kyle Field. It was a hard fought game by both sides and an exciting game to watch. I am sorry all you saw were "dorks".

Darren Nov 14 06

Aggie,

Oh jeez, I'm sorry. Okay??

But, wow, if one comment by one blogger can shake your impression of Husker Nation to the foundation like that, you might want to get some thicker skin. Or widen your perception some.

First the crazy over-reaction to Steve's A&M preview ("mobile home"). Now this. So sensitive...I can't imagine how you would you handle it if our Coach called your fans hillbillies, like he called OU fans.

I say a lot of very complimentary things (in person and online) about a lot of fans from around the conference. And, I'm not alone in taking some fun jabs at fan bases too. This IS the Internet. I wouldn't snoop too closely if this is how you react to things.

And, I saw a LOT of things on Saturday. Not, "just" dorks as you say. I saw two quality football teams play their guts out. I saw rabid, caring fans. And I saw Lassie's cousin on the sideline.

Btw, NU fans have been called hicks, farmers, nerds and everything else in between, by people in conference and out of conference. We just let it roll off of our back. Hey, lots of us farm. That's okay. Own it, dude. Just own it.

Let's just sweetly burn all Big XII fans and get it over with (starting with the one that hurts most):

Nebraska: Delusionally obsessive plainsmen
KSU: Over-confident wheat-eaters
KU: Morons cheering the wrong sport
MU: Terminally mediocre in spite of talent
CU: Birkenstock-wearing fair-weather fans
ISU: Clones huddling in the shadows of Kinnick

UT: Spoiled rich oil tycoons
OU: 'Effing Hillbillies'
Baylor: No need to make fun of Bears fans; it's like beating a dead Temple Owl
TT: Kid brother syndrome
ATM: 'dorks'
OSU: See 'TT'

There, now we're all revealed as chumps, and we can name corn fans 'best chumps.'

Great posting, loved the Peterson stuff!!

Just wanted to make a quick comment about our much-maligned secondary. As I watch them, I can barely figure out what coverage they are actually in (and I use to scout and coach for a living). Our base is suppose to be a Cover 2, yet our corners are lined up in a man technique, as is our strong safety. It looks to me like everytime there are 3 or more splits in the route, we are checking into a Cover 1 combo coverage. If we are actually playing a true Cover 2, then someone needs to teach our DBs how to play it, because they aren't even close!!

Great artile Darren, keepin' it real. We have every right to feel good right now, let's embrace it, it's been a long time!

Nebraska needs to ONLY focus on those buffs, upsets are contageous, and we look like a big juicy steak to Colorado right now.

As far as Texas, I am not convinced Colt McCoy would have won that KSU game...unless McCoy played Defense. 45 points is alot to overcome.

Anyways, whether UT or Oklahoma in the Big12 Championship...Bring It On, respect is earned and the Huskers are Back!!

Aggie Nov 14 06

I don't want your apology. I live smack dab in the middle of Longhorn town, so I am plenty thick skinned. My point was that your posting did not seem to utter any respect for the team that just gave you Coach Callahan's big quality win. I just wanted to make sure you saw the same game I did. And, to be sure there are no hurt feelings, let me restate - "Good game Huskers, we'll try to get you next year." And, good luck in the Big 12 Championship. With any luck for the Aggies, you will facing OU as we knock t.u. out of the picture.

Chip Winfrey Nov 14 06

I sure didn't share your impression that the announcers were rooting for A&M.

Pretty lame comment regarding the "dorks." Coming from someone associated with a school that has about as big a 'hillbilly' reputation as one can get, I'd think you'd tread lightly before making such statements. Guess not.

Jorvorskie Lane is a beast, period. The fact that he was grossly underutilized is the biggest reason we allowed OU and Nebraska to beat us. That rests squarely on Fran's head.

Nebraska showed incredible heart and character in that game, and I was proud of the Husker players, even if they were breaking my heart into thousands of pieces!

Always enjoy visits from the Nebraska fans. No finer fans in college football, period.

Scott Nov 15 06

Aggie,

That is a very good football team you have there. And I think I can speak for a lot of Husker fans when I say that I appreciate the school spirit and enthusiasm that you and the other Aggie fans show. What those two teams did out there last Saturday was a great example of what college football is all about.

Good luck against the Horns and good luck in your bowl game....and see you next year!! If you come up we hope you enjoy Lincoln.

darren Nov 15 06

Aggie and Chip,

Big respect to A&M. Great game. You have a good team this year - one capable of beating the Horns and shutting up your neighbors. Great history and rabid fans - classy, caring folks. Good luck as the season unfolds.

Hey, I'd hope my "dorks" comment doesn't tarnish the fact that NU fans are the class of college football. Just visit Lincoln and you'll know it to be true.

Hey, I run my mouth. It's a blog, ya know. And, I wouldn't say something if other folks weren't at least thinking it. Laugh at yourselves some, okay?

Proud to be a hick NU fan from the plains...

Aggie Nov 15 06

Darren,

Like I said, no hard feelings. And I am sincere in giving you guys my congrats on a great game and wishing you luck in the Big 12 title game. I can't imagine a better scenario than the Big 12 Title Game featuring two teams (NU and OU) that managed to beat the Aggies by a combined safety. :) And, for the record, my view of Nebraska fans has not been diminished. You guys are a class act. And, if Coach Fran manages to take one away from you in Lincoln, I know my team and my fans will be treated with respect and hospitality - win or lose. And, yes I do laugh at myself - hey, did you hear the one about the Aggie who was picked to win the war in Iraq? Oh wait, that's yesterday's headline...

Joe Nov 17 06

Good read!

Hang Nov 20 06

Darren, your "dork" comments obviously zeroed on the corps of cadets, even though they make up only about 5% of the A&M student body. That's OK, since the Corps is the most important tradition at A&M. Sure, they may stand out, but that's OK by me. Just please remember that outside of the service academies, A&M has sent more young men and women into the armed forces to serve and defend this country, including mush mouths like you who think that corned beef is a gourmet dish. While I doubt you are capable of appreciating the traditions at A&M, just please remember that our campus is graced with many memorials to Aggies who have paid the ultimate price for freedom. If it comes across as nerdy to you, well, that's your problem, not ours.

Darren Nov 20 06

Hang,

You are wrong. Way off, in fact. The "dork" comment was not just directed at the corps. I am just put off by the orchestrated chants, the collie dog cemetary and the need to use football touchdowns as a way to score with your dates. Can't you just get the girls drunk after the game? Always worked for me. ;-)

Seriously, I can't believe you played the troops card in this argument. I have friends and family who either have or currently are serving active duty in the military. And, our site just gave huge props to our armed forces in a Q&A. I support the troops, more than you could possibly know, pal. So, just leave that on some other site. Okay?
