LaTravis Washington Commits

latravis.jpg Scout.com reports that LaTravis Washington gave his oral commitment to the Huskers. People might want to compare him to Fabian Washington (since they're family) or a guy like Tony Veland (who was a high school quarterback turned safety). But truthfully, I can't recall a safety recruit that brought this kind of size. Even guys like Ed Stewart, Troy Dumas and Jamel Williams who ended up as linebackers didn't go 210 pounds out of high school.

No, a better comparison is former Miami Hurricane and current Washington Redskin, Sean Taylor or former Oklahoma Sooner and current Dallas Cowboy Roy Williams. Both were All-Americans and both were early first-round NFL draft picks. Let's also not forget that Fabian was also taken in the first round. OK, now I'm drooling on my keyboard.

latravis2.jpg The truly great defenses have players that cause matchup problems. In the Huskers best years they fielded safeties that hit like linebackers (think Mike Brown) and linebackers that could run like safeties. Wherever this guy ends up playing, that's what he'll be - a matchup nightmare for opponents.

I know I'm counting my chickens way too soon here. First, a commit is not a signed letter of intent, is not acceptance to the University, and is not actually showing up on campus. There's also no guarantee this guy is going to play like any of those big names I mentioned. Maybe he's just the next Mark Vedral. There's also talk that the SAT score isn't where it needs to be yet.

But if this kid does come to Nebraska, it's hard to think he'll be anything less than a starter by his second or third year (if not sooner). As a former quarterback, you expect a high football IQ and the ability to be a leader. Niles Paul, might be the most heralded recruit in the class so far and Witt the most talked about. But Washington is the guy I'm most excited about. I wish they could play him next week.

Wow, I love seeing this. Like Steve, I think Mr. Washington is one of our *best* recruits in this class.

Players like this make it easy to disregard the online scouting "star" systems. Washington is rated a 3-star prospect in their systems. Why? Because they are evaluating him as a quarterback. I won't be a QB at NU. He'll be one bad ass defender, though. Huge get for NU, really.

Now...they need to get him eligible.
