The Top 25 – Week Six

by

Ohio State retained its top ranking in the Associated Press top 25 poll and USC remained third, but the rest of the top ten changed spots after a weekend that saw Auburn, LSU, and Georgia tumble from the top ten. Florida leapfrogged three spots into second place with the win over LSU.

The Huskers climbed one spot from 22nd to 21st with the win over Iowa State passing Virginia Tech (who was on a bye), Oklahoma (who lost to Texas, and Florida State (who lost to North Carolina State). Arkansas and Missouri each passed the Huskers with their wins over Auburn and Texas Tech, respectively.

Most of the rankings seem fair but the one particularly troubling team is LSU, ranked 14th. With two road losses and four home wins over mostly losing teams (with Louisiana-Lafayette the lone exception), LSU is getting a lot of respect for “losing pretty” and presumably its success in past seasons. Twenty-third ranked Oklahoma is the only other two-loss team in the top 25 and many people might regard the game against Oregon as a loss with an asterisk because of the questionable officiating late in the game.
The Tigers may eventually prove they deserve a #14 ranking, but so far in 2006 they’ve done less than a number of teams ranked behind them, like Missouri who is 6-0 and just beat a team ranked in the coaches poll in their building.

Despite the win at Iowa State, Nebraska dropped in the Sagarin predictor ratings, but is still a seven point favorite against Kansas State. Oddsmakers put the line at eleven so the Huskers will have to improve to cover the Vegas number.
