The Top 25 – Week Eight
Perhaps a sign that the Huskers are gaining respect nationally, they did not drop out of the AP Top 20 and Texas did not fall from the Top 5 for having such a close call. Nebraska (#20) still ranks ahead of Missouri (#23) despite having a worse record. Future opponent Texas A&M sits at #22 and Oklahoma sits at #19.
Ohio State, Michigan, and USC still sit atop the BCS standings but Michigan has overtaken the Trojans spot at second place. West Virginia edged out Auburn for fourth place and Texas climbed two spots with the win in Lincoln (the computers already respected Nebraska, I suppose). Louisville and Notre Dame each dropped one spot in victory in the BCS, each winning in fairly unimpressive fashion. Nebraska dropped to 22nd in the BCS, despite sitting 20th in each of the other polls.
The Huskers actually climbed one notch in the Sagarin predictor ratings this week to #20 and they would put Nebraska as a 3-point favorite at Oklahoma State. Oddsmakers have set the early line at 5.5 for the Huskers which means Sagarin would say take OK-State to cover. Sagarin places the Longhorns as third best in the country behind Ohio State and Cal (that’s not a misprint).
The good news is Sagarin’s ratings place the Huskers as the favorite in each of its remaining games which would leave the Huskers at 10-2 and the Big XII North champs. Of course, as they say “you’re only as good as your last game” and that’s especially true with computer polls so a lot can change week to week. Oklahoma State is actually the toughest remaining game for NU (per Sagarin’s predictor) so the Huskers better get over last Saturday’s heartbreak in a hurry.
