The Top 25 - Week 3

by

taylor.jpg The Huskers took only a minor hit in the polls this week after a loss to USC that hovered around consensus expectations (i.e. the point spread). The Huskers dropped to 23rd in the AP and 24th in the coaches' poll after being ranked 19th in each going into Saturday. USC is now ranked #3 in the AP poll after Notre Dame's loss and remains #2 in the coaches' poll. Michigan climbed 5 spots in the AP and 7 in the coaches' poll for sixth place in each poll after demolishing Notre Dame.

Continuing my attack on Tennessee, the Volunteers dropped to #15 in the AP and #19 in the coaches' poll. Granted, they nearly beat Florida but this is now two weeks in a row (out of only 3 games) where they haven't looked better than their opponent.

Oklahoma dropped to #17 and #16 in the AP and coaches' polls while Oregon climbed to #13 and #12 respectively. But a bigger crime than the botched replay in the OU-Oregon game is that Clemson is ranked behind Florida State in both polls, despite beating the Seminoles in Tallahassee. FSU is #18 in the AP poll while Clemson is #19. The coaches put FSU #17 and Clemson #23. Ouch.

But perhaps the most satisfying thing for Husker fans (and college footballs almost everywhere) is that Miami has dropped out of both polls following an embarrasing loss to Louisville.

The Sagarin predictor ratings still rate the Huskers as the 11th best team nationally and have USC as the top ranked team. Unfortunately, the second ranked team using his predictor formula is Texas, which would be a four-point favorite in Lincoln using Sagarin's numbers. Sagarin's predictor rankings would also make the Huskers a 26-point favorite over Troy. I hope that's how things play out, because Troy played FSU (and Georgia Tech) tough and a big win would certainly show that the Huskers were capable of outperforming an ACC media darling.
