The Top 25 – Week 2
Texas had a soft landing to #8 in the AP Top 25 Poll after their loss to Ohio State. Granted they lost to the #1 team but the offense looked pretty inept. Florida State remains in the Top 10 despite allowing Troy State to hang around for four quarters. If I were a Louisville fan, I wouldn’t be too happy about that.
Husker fans can bemoan the Big Ten “premium I identified this summer when I compared the computer polls to the AP Poll. Iowa sits at #16 despite needing overtime to dispatch with a hapless Syracuse team. Penn State remains #25 despite getting thumped by Notre Dame and following a mostly unimpressive 34-16 victory over Akron in their opener (granted the Zips have since beaten NC State).
Tennessee looked more like the 5-6 team it was a year ago in escaping with a 1-point victory over Air Force than the giant-killer but they still hold the #13 rating in the AP Poll
The Sagarin predictor ratings, a purely statistical formula, ranks USC as the number 1 team in the country and Nebraska as number 9. However, the point spread implied by these ratings is 17 for the Trojans playing at home. So even if a “by the numbers approach says the Huskers are a top ten team, things look no easier for the Huskers as they head to L.A.
For the record, Sagarin’s predictor ratings put Louisville at #2, Ohio State at #4, Notre Dame at #10, Texas at #13, Tennessee at #15, Iowa at #20, Florida State at #29 and Penn State at #37.
