NU Recruits - One for Now, One for Later

Nebraska's season-opening win brought some nice recruiting results along with it. The Huskers got verbal commitments from two players last weekend. One is a player for the 2007 class and the other is a major commitment for the class of 2008.

Fullback prospect Quentin Castille was the latest to give his verbal commitment to be a part of NU's 2007 recruiting class. There are many reasons to be happy with this commitment. For starters, the kid is a big, physical fullback who can be a nice fit in NU's offense. He's 6'1'' and 220+ pounds as a high school player. Next, he's yet another player from the talent-rich state of Texas (La Porte HS). You can't say enough about the quick inroads the coaching staff is making in Texas. Finally, I always use the other teams who offered a player as an indicator of their potential. I find it more telling than star ratings (Castille is 3-stars, by the way). Castille had offers in the Big 10 (Northwestern and Michigan State), the ACC (Georgia Tech) and from a top-15 program (Louisville). That's a nice list. To top it all off, Iowa State coveted Castille. And, it is always a bonus to keep a player away from a conference rival.

Nebraska also got a very early verbal commitment for the class of 2008, in the form of Baker Steinkuhler. You might have heard his father - Dean - who has his number retired at NU. And, his brother Ty Steinkhuler is the on the 2-deep roster for NU at defensive tackle. Again, there are many reasons to be happy about Baker choosing NU. First, he's the best player in NE for 2008, hands down. The kid is a load at 6'6'' and 275+ pounds as a junior in high school. He absolutely dazzled at NU's summer camps. Sort of like getting Niles Paul for 2007, locking him down early is key for NU, since many other big-time schools covet him. At a minimum, I think he is every bit the talent that Potter was at Creighton Prep a few years ago. And, it continues to keep the new pipeline to Lincoln Southwest wide open. First Ty, then Ben Martin, now Baker. Southwest is quickly becoming one of the powerhouse HS programs in the state.

So, NU won in more ways than one on Saturday. Hopefully, continued wins and the impressive facilities make hauling in commitments common every week.

I think that Southeast has always been a perimer HS program, top 5 always in the state. Ranked nationally a few times by usa today. and this dates to near 10 years ago they have been pumping out recurits to Nebraska constantly. ie Rudd's, rigoni, Chris Loos, this list goes on and on.

Omar, Baker plays for Lincoln Southwest, not Lincoln Southeast. You're right that Southeast WAS a premier program. The opening of Lincoln Southwest 5 years ago has depleted Lincoln Southwest's talent pool to the point that they are no longer a top 5 program.
