Mangino is fat. Seriously, seriously fat.

cartman.jpg I know it doesn't have anything to do with football. And it might be a little insensitive to say it. And, Kansas fans will come out of the woodwork to scold me for bringing it up again. But, Nebraska's game with Kansas this week revealed the obvious once again. Mark Mangino is fat, very fat. And, isn't it about time he did something about it?

When you see pictures of Mangino or see him on TV, it hard not to stop and sort of marvel at how big he is. A friend of mine would say he is "State Fair fat". It's like I suddenly know why they removed Pluto as a planet. They were making room for Mangino. The guy is like a planetoid. I saw somebody throw him a water bottle and it stopped 4 feet from him. Then...it went it to a circular orbit. The guy has his own gravitational field!

He sort of makes me think of what Southpark's Eric Cartman would look like all grown up. Can't you just hear the KU sideline? "You guys, seriously. Run the quarterback draw! You must respect my authority!"

On a serious note

Okay, I'm done making sport of this guy's weight now. Really, I shouldn't judge. I'm genetically fortunate enough to have never had to battle a weight problem. And, I know folks who have and know that it is tough. But, here's what really rubs me about Mangino's weight, and what should bother other overweight Americans, too. This guy has all the resources in the world to help him lose weight. Seriously, he has professional trainers and dieticians and very fine facilities all at his disposal. Maybe Mangino has a disorder or glandular problem that makes it harder for him. I don't know. But at this point, it looks like only variable has to be the person himself. And, that's just sad.

mangino.jpg We all know how stressful the coaching profession is. And, the coaches at Maryland and Toledo both dropped 50+ pounds to try and improve their health. I can only hope Mangino is doing or will do the same for himself. Please, mix a salad in to your diet and walk a few laps. Until then, your weight and behavior risk your health, Coach. And, you make yourself a topic for bloggers like me.

I would delete this story -

Okay, folks. I'm ready for whatever fallout comes from talking about an opposing coach's weight. Comment away or e-mail me. First, some explanation.

Frankly, his weight a topic because it is out there and obvious to many fans who mention it in person and online. And, it HAS been discussed in the mainstream media, during the build up to KU's clash with Toledo.

And, I think I made a clear argument for why it bothers me, and I expressed my honest hope for Coach Mangino to improve his health. That is sincere and real, despite my opening salvo of weight jokes.

And, at BRN we're going to say controversial things sometimes. We post a lot of satire here. I've called Mike Leach soulless and commented on Mike Price's love of strippers. And, I've even commented on coaches' money, which some may find unnecessary.

In my opinion, this post is not that different than any of those.

If you don't like it, I'm open to criticism. We always respect our users' opinions.

I would NOT delete this story. It is quite a relevant story. America has a huge problem with obesity and it is hurting all of us socially, physically and economically. Mangino is a leader of many young men and admired for his coaching abilities. He should take the initiative to realize what a healthy lifestyle can do for longevity and quality of life.

Mark Mangino is not getting any smaller. He is without a doubt a great coach but he will not be coaching very much longer unless he does something about this. For his sake, his family's sake, and his player's sake, I hope he can shed some pounds and put his health in the right direction.

he might have his own lunar cycle, but i bet he knows where the good barbeque's at.

He may be big and fat, but he is coming to College Station with the Jayhawks ranked #9 in the BCS as the favorites over the Aggies. When was the last time someone said that with a straight face?

I thought that maybe the players were not relating to Charlie Weiss because he was this heavy set guy that they didn't respect and that's one of the reasons N.D. was having such a horrible season. Then, you look at Mangino, twice as big, and KU has not lost. Personally, I think the coach's appearance shows a lack of discipline and is not a very good role model although he seems to be getting results. It makes little sense to tell someone else to be in shape when he is excessively out of shape. Furthermore, he has access to trainers and nutritionists, so his choice of obesity is his own unless he has some disorder no one knows about. Either way, he should do something about it.

I Googled "Mangino too fat" and backed into this blog. It appears Mangino really can coach. Having said that, the more success he enjoys, the more KU should obligate Gigantor to get a gastric bypass. Would anyone be shocked if during a closely fought ballgame, Mangino clutched his chest, fell to his knees and blew out about half a dozen corn dogs, and croaked on the spot? Before that happens, the U needs to tell that guy to lose some doggone weight. Furthermore, how does a dude who is 200 pounds overweight bark at a bunch of kids about discipline? C'mon now...

I saw pictures of coach from about 10years ago and at that time he was buff. NO JOKE
It HAS to be a medical condition.

Nikki Nov 16 07

That is unhealthy.
He looks like Fat Bastard on Austin Powers.

KC Nov 19 07

Honest to God this guy is beyond fat. It's unpleasant to even look at. When you ask him to haul ass how many trips does it take him ? But you can't argue he's had a helleva year and is obviously a very good coach.

Amen! Thank you for saying what I've been thinking!!! Weight problems genetic?? Glandular Problem?? I firmly believe weight problems aren't genetic, so much as habit. Glandular problems are rare. Most people don't start out fat, they become fat because of the examples they are given by their parents. I was a very pudgy kid because my mom was always making sugary treats and no one was monitoring my food intake. My mom told me I was 'big-boned.' I'm not, I just finally pulled my head out of my ass and addressed the situation. I'd be fat now if I didn't exercise. Mangino certainly has a medical condition, it's called obesity and he needs to get it under control

In all my web surfing, I don't think I have ever read such crap. They are lot's of fat people in this world. One of them being your mother. Why don't you blog that.

Doesn't matter. The guy's ticker only has a year or two left in it. He'll be dead long before he takes KU to a national title.

Sorry if the truth hurts, but the guy is an undisciplined obese idiot when it comes to his health.
