Huskers Pass Character Test
In the "buildup" (if you can call it that) to this past week's game versus Troy, we at the Big Red Network couldn't help but notice our own lack of enthusiasm for the upcoming game. It sort of concerned us that perhaps the team would be nursing the same USC hangover that we were. Fortunately, when the Huskers took the field, it was clear that they were fully prepared for their gutty, but overmatched foe.
The biggest drama in the game seemed to be whether Cody Glenn would enter. When news of Glenn's hamstring injury became known after the game, pretty much all that could be said was that the Huskers executed their game plan well. Marlon Lucky had his best game to date, and the Huskers rushed for over 300 yards for the first time under Bill Callahan. But more importantly, we learned that the Huskers would not get distracted in preparations for a seemingly easy game against a dangerous opponent.
Hopefully, that spills over into the coming week against Kansas. The Huskers will want to win big against the Jayhawks, but it's not often that you can blow out an opponent just one year after getting routed by them. Sure there were freakish things like a blocked punt and an interception returned for a touchdown. But the Jayhawks still sport a defense that is strong statistically and a return game that's been more productive than Nebraska's. The Huskers will need to prepare every bit as well this week as they did for Troy. Fortunately, they've now shown the character to do just that.
This week, for both the players and the fans, Saturday can't come soon enough.
