ESPN College GameDay in LA!

As if Husker fans needed another reason to be excited about Saturday, it is now confirmed that the ESPN College GameDay crew will be in Los Angeles for the game between USC and NU. So, Husker fans making the trip will get to gander at Chris Fowler, the "dreamy" Kirk Herbstreit, and Lee Corso and his infamous prediction-making headwear. Beyond that, there is good reason for Husker fans to be excited (and a little nervous) about this development.

This week's slate of Saturday games borders on college football Nirvana. Find a big screen or two and settle in folks. Auburn plays LSU, Tennessee takes on Florida, Michigan visits Notre Dame. And there are many other very big match ups that I'm not even mentioning. And, from all of this craziness emerges USC vs. NU. It's getting the full treatment from ESPN and ABC.

We'll have the GameDay crew there before the game and following it. So, expect to see Corso in a Trojan get up. That ought to be disturbing. And, it will be the big-time Saturday night game on ABC. So, we get a full dose of "the Mus" to go with it. Brent (open container) Musburger will be calling the game with Herbstreit and coaching-legend-turned-broadcaster, Bob Davie. Who could ask for anything more for your media dollar?

I am stoked that this game is getting the national spotlight, especially considering the other games this week. I honestly don't remember the last time the GameDay crew was on hand to watch NU. OU in 2001, maybe? The effects of this kind of attention are very good for NU's renewed national profile and recruiting a generation of players who only care about what is hot right now.

Though, knowing more eyeballs will be on NU than at any other time in the last 5 years makes me a bit nervous. The Huskers can not afford to lay an egg in this game. Play well, and it is a coming out party. Get thrashed, and it hurts even more.

Some say that there are only two kinds of players - those who step up when the pressure is on, and those who back down in the face of expectations. Well...the spotlight is now squarely on NU. What kind of team will America see?

I think the selection of this game by ESPN is a sign of respect for Nebraska. Sure this game will be easy to hype but a Nebraska win signals a huge shift in the balance of power around the country. USC takes a step backward, Nebraska takes a huge step forward (probably back into the Top 10 for the first time in years). It would send the Pac-10 reeling and puts the Big XII back on top after the Texas loss. If they felt Nebraska had no chance, I'm not sure they'd bother since a USC win wouldn't mean nearly as much.

It could be a sign of respect...but more likely it's a chance for the media to hate on NU some more. Corso has never been a fan of the Huskers. I don't know of many NU fans that like Musburger, and after his incident in Lincoln, I doubt he cares for our state and our football team much either. Too bad they can't convince Keith Jackson to be the play-by play commentator.

It is nothing less or more than an acknowledgement that this game is the highlight of the weekend. There is no grander stage for college football than a sold out Coloseum and few teams in college football history with the tradition of these two programs. Nebraska will probably get their butts handed to them due to the fact that they are not at USC's level talent wise and because the two patsies they have played so far do more harm than good to prepare a team for a big game.

Hey I'll take it!!! When is the last time Nebraska has even been mentioned in the same sentence as a "highlight of the weekend"? Lord knows it has been a LONG time. We should all take a moment and realize if anything Callahan has brought the Nebraska program back to that stature. The sold out "Coloseum" (or Coliseum) will have a lot of Husker Red in it. It will be a true test for Nebraska... we aren't making the trip to "stay with USC" we are making the trip to WIN!
Easy on the patsie comments... I would not necessarily call Arkansas a powerhouse, although it is impressive opening up on the road. There is something to be said for rhythm, getting real game time experience for our young players is invaluable. No matter who the opponent. It will be a lot closer then expected! I hope people think we will get our butts handed to us...we seem to play better when we are the underdog!

GO BIG RED!

Dear Mr Chris Fowler,

I just watched espn about the Reggie Bush acceppting gifts controvery. I say helll no about giving Vince young the heisman. If its Prooven Bush knew it was wrong why should anybody else be punished except for Bush. Vince Young should Not get the Heisman.

He cheated in the National Championship Game. He was down by contact with his Knee on the Ground and the refs gave him a touchdown. The Heisman should go to Matt Leinart. Vince Young knew the T.D was illeagal.
