Those Other Trojans
Previewing Troy
One week after the hotly contested battle between Nebraska and Southern Cal, the Huskers must prepare to again do battle with the Trojans -of Troy University. While the Huskers will either be seeking to refocus after a glorious victory or instead licking their wounds and looking for a get well game, the Trojans will have their own issues to contend with. In the two weeks leading up to the contest with Nebraska, Troy must play at Florida State and at Georgia Tech back-to-back. “Reeling” might be the best word to describe the Trojans at that point.
2005 was not a banner year for the Trojan offense. They managed to score fewer than sixteen points per contest. Their defense fared admirably in giving up only 23 points per game. But facing powerhouses like Florida State and Georgia Tech in your second and third games of the season is not the easiest way to turn around an offense or shore up a defense. It’s very likely that the Trojans will limp into a Memorial stadium beaten up both physically and psychologically.
Still this Trojan team is not to be disregarded totally. A glance at their recruiting in recent seasons would suggest that the Trojans have recruited as well or better than Louisiana Tech. Their head coach had tremendous success in Division I-AA and managed to lead the team to a 7-5 record in 2004 as a Division I-A squad. There’s little to suggest that Troy can come in and upset the Huskers but that doesn’t mean they can’t make things interesting, especially if the Huskers have a Southern Cal hangover.
Focus will be the key word in the days leading up to this game. As long as the Huskers take their opponent seriously, they should be able to win comfortably which might give them a chance to rest some starters late in the game before the first conference game – a home game against Kansas.
