Roster Rambling
For what it is worth, NU's new roster is out.
This provides a nice resource for those who care to know more about a player's season outlook, and what number they are wearing.
Personally, I like to look over the online roster for a lot of reasons. First, it lets me put a face with a name. Football is sometimes called the "anonymous sport" because the helmet covers a player's face. Next, I think the season outlook and brief bios of the players can provide a few tidbits of information, or at least help pass the time. But, maybe that is just me - Mr. Input Overload - talking.
Mostly, I like to look at the new roster because of any number changes. Unlike some, I place some signifcance on them. I like to know who is wearing which number and can quickly see and know who is subbing in when. I also like to know which player is wearing one of NU's "icon" numbers...7, 30, 20, 15, etc. So, looking over the roster, these are the number changes I noticed. Please make a note of them.
Zackary Bowman - #14
Chris Brooks - #1
Phil Dillard - #52
Joe Ganz - #12
Dave Harvey - #80
Leon Jackson - #5
Dontrell Moore - #19
Tyrell Spain - #18
Ndamukong Suh - #93
And keep in mind there are likely some players who could be with the team who aren't on the listed roster yet. So, this isn't a perfect list.
Who knows why some people pick the number they do? Some players honestly don't care. But, most do. Cory Ross was #22 before his #4 came up because 2+2 = 4. Kind of funny. Octavian apparently wears #15 (a strange number for a LB) because he was a Tommie Frazier fan. I've heard that Marlon Lucky didn't really know the importance of NU's #20 (Johnny the Jet's number) when he took it.
I remember reading that Bowman didn't necessarily like wearing #1, and that he was waiting for Bullocks to graduate so he could go back to his favorite #14. Bowman has shown a great deal of humility in his time with NU. And, I think the perception of wearing #1 didn't suit him much at all, with the "I'm the man" message that number sometimes sends.
So, I guess Chris Brooks Sr. doesn't lack in confidence...

Did anyone out ther wonder why we didn,t throw to win the USC game, where was the two min drill at end of half? Running, running to set up the pass that almost never came. We have a character flawed coach, witness previous losses with bullheaded game plan that he refuses to change to try to win. he has this beautiful offense that could have opened up and taken those guys for a ride and he demoralized his qb and receivers (14 attempts?) I predict that he will never win a championship at Nebraska

Sure MDJ, a few people have asked that question. I think Steve addresses that fairly well in this story.
The short answer is that "opening up the offense" like other USC opponents have tried would probably have resulted in turnovers and more points for USC. Controlling the ball and eating the clock was our best shot with matchups we had (especially at WR/CB).
No need to give up though. That "beautiful offense" will really bloom after another year or two of recruiting the atheletes we need for the WCO.
