It Aint That Soon
Everywhere I turn for sports information, people are telling me football is almost here. Never mind that the Huskers first game is more than six weeks away, and the same is true for the NFL (preseason doesn’t cut it for me – which itself is still almost three weeks away). To me it’s just cruel. It’s like telling a kid that Christmas is “almost here” two weeks before Thanksgiving or a woman in labor she’s “almost done pushing” three minutes into a 12 hour labor.
Why the false statements? Because they know how much we love our pigskin and it’s a good way to get us to tune in for non-news items (like how Denver rookie Jay Cutler has looked in 7-on-7 passing drills).
Let’s be real. Six weeks is still a fairly long time. If you’re not into golf (where you can catch two majors between now and September), tennis (where the US Open, the last grand slam championship of the year, starts just before September), cycling (where an American is poised to yet again win the thing to the dismay of the French), or baseball (where two-thirds of the teams are still in the hunt), you’re just going to have to suck it up another six weeks.
My advice? Get something done you wouldn’t want to do during football season. Take a vacation. Go shopping like someone’s been nagging you to. Read a book. See some movies. Get out and be active while the weather is warm. Or visit your favorite sports website spouting non-news about how football is “almost here”.
Or better yet. Go get your Big Red Network Widget and watch the days count down till kickoff!
