Huskers Land a Haymaker

by

Cozad - the town that brought Husker fans Brendan Holbein and Chris Dishman - has produced another Husker recruit. NU's latest verbal commitment comes from Jared Crick, a 6'6'', 245 lb TE/DE prospect. This commitment sends quite a few positive messages.

First, anybody who believes the staff isn't committed to getting players from within the state needs to just chill out. To date, NU has four members of the '07 class and two of them are from Nebraska. It's pretty clear that scholarship offers from this staff are based on merit. Is there an emphasis to get in to the "big three" states (CA, TX and FLA)? Of course. That's also just a function of population studies. There are lots of players there. But, it is also vital to defend your home state from outside teams. So far, the '07 cycle has been a mixed bag in that regard, with Gunn and Bates both opting for schools other than NU.

Next, it is always nice to beat out conference rivals (Colorado, Iowa State, Kansas) for a player. NU thought people (particularly Solich at Ohio) might be moving in on Crick, and got the offer in to his hands before the football camp season started. Again, I'm impressed with the ability to execute.

Crick is a good "get" for NU. He's a very nice prospect who could play on either side of the ball at NU. Good measurables and good production on the field. Cozad may also have another D-1 football player on their squad in Luke Pinkleman. The state shot-put champion, Pinkleman has been a force for Cozad in football too. Though, his height (6'2'') and track prowess may lead him to be a D-1 track athlete instead. My sister and her family live in Cozad. So, there's a chance I'll be able to take in a Haymaker game this fall, and see both prospects in person.

It's nice to see NU developing some recruiting momentum as the head in to their camp season.
