Week 2 Picks 0 comments

Nebraska covered the massive spread against Western Kentucky last week.  But with a line as high as 28.5 against a team as good as Idaho, that's expecting too much.  The Huskers should win, but not by more than four touchdowns.  In other action...

Bad Blood Between Ex-Husker Assistants? 2 comments

While not directly disparaging Turner Gill, North Dakota State's Head Coach Craig Bohl has ripped into what he saw from Kansas football last weekend.  According to Bohl's interview with "In The FCS Huddle", Northern Iowa will be a more rowdy place to play, with more physical players, and a better opponent.  For two ex-Husker players and coaches, it was a surprise that Bohl did not dole out a little more respect towards the program that Gill is leading.  Bohl was a Linebacker's coach and Defensive Coordinator from 1995-2002 while Gill was the Quarterbacks coach at Nebraska.

So This Is What “Multiple” Looks Like 8 comments

Since his arrival three years ago, Bo Pelini has said he expects his offense to be “multiple”. The fits and starts NU went through in this transition created a bit of an offensive identity crisis for the Huskers. At first, NU tried to be a power run team. Then, the 2008 offense flourished with Joe Ganz in the shotgun and throwing short passes to receivers. Call it the spread, if you must. But that’s what Nebraska became – ball control through throwing. Absent Ganz, last year’s offensive woes were born of a will to be a power run team again, but a lack of healthy offensive linemen and running backs to do it. So, now, in year number three, are we starting to see the vestiges of what Pelini’s “multiple” offense looks like?

Requiem for the Sleeve 7 comments

Normally I have no problems ruling on uniform minutiae but I'm having some problems with the new placement of the TV numbers on the Huskers' jerseys. Do I like it or don't I? One one hand, the ever shortening sleeve makes the stripes look almost like a UCLA-stripe from afar. That's good. But the also shrinking numbers now seem like an afterthought. Where should we put these? How about the shoulder?

I think the one thing that's certain is that, as football jerseys become tanktops, there's no longer room for both. Personally, I'd keep the numbers and ditch the stripes. It looked good and clean on the throwbacks last year, but what say you?

D-Line Hoping to Turn Up Heat on Idaho 3 comments

The Husker defensive line should be licking their chops this week.  Idaho's offensive line lost a 1st-round draft pick last year and a total of four starters.  In the first half of the game last week, the Vandals allowed North Platte native Nathan Enderle to get sacked four times.  If Nebraska can gain leverage against this large offensive line, they can stop the run first and turn up the pass rush pressure on the QB.  That will be the key in dominating this week's game.

Meredith Should be Fine 0 comments

For those wondering about the injury status for sophomore defensive end Cameron Meredith, there appears to be good news. Meredith injured his shoulder on Saturday against Western Kentucky, but the injury does not appear to be severe. Meredith is back practicing with the team and could be available for the game against Idaho this weekend. By the way, Meredith is also still rocking a sweet mustache.

Pondering the Niles Paul Paradox 25 comments

Husker wide receiver presents big plays, miscues

Niles Paul is a paradox. Both on and off the field, he presents some serious contradictions for Husker fans to consider. Last year, he could make spectacular receptions and punt returns one week and costly mistakes the next. This off season, he looked and talked the part of the team leader – inspiring great off season workouts and team drills. But then, he got cited for his second alcohol-related offense this summer. Don’t look now, but a bit of the Paul paradox sneaked into last week’s game against Western Kentucky, at least the on-the-field part. The Huskers’ key for big success in 2010 hinges – in no small part – on getting this riddle solved.

The WAC is Back in Lincoln 10 comments

So Long, Sun Belt

For the first time in nearly two years Nebraska fans will get the chance to welcome a team not from the Sun Belt Conference to Memorial Stadium on Saturday. Before last September the Huskers had never faced a team from the SBC. Since then, that's all they've faced on the home turf outside the Big 12.

But now the WAC is back in what will be the Huskers' 21st game against the conference. And, in case you didn't notice, it's a conference that's coming off an uncharacteristically high profile opening week to the season.

Bo’s Improving Wardrobe 6 comments

The maturation of Bo Pelini as a head coach continued on Saturday. Evidenced not just by his choosing to start a redshirt freshman quarterback in the opener, but also by his attire. His trademark gray sweatshirt was set aside for a nice white sport shirt. Well done, coach. Way to get that white worn before Labor Day. We can't help but believe that when the temperatures cool and the football action heats up that the sweatshirt might once again find its way to the Husker sideline.

Monday Morning Musings on Week One 13 comments

Thanksgiving is a great holiday for those who love football (and gorging), but Labor Day is quickly becoming a close second with five straight days of college football after a long period of fasting. Even a game like Tulsa and East Carolina delivered in a big way. And the Texas Tech-SMU game probably didn't make the best first impression for Tommy Tuberville on Red Raider fans. He can be glad he's not Turner Gill though, who gets this year's Dan Hawkins trophy for most disappointing coaching debut. Houston Nutt wins the Lloyd Carr version of the trophy for least excusable loss by an incumbent coach, after Ole Miss lost to Jacksonville State. But first, some more on the Huskers defensive effort Saturday night.

Coaches, Fans, and Media Reaction is Good, Bad, and Ugly 8 comments

Wow.  So that was the most hyped up game against an opponent that's lost 20 in a row that I've ever seen.  From just gauging the reaction to the defense and Taylor Martinez, a casual observer might guess that the Huskers lost 100-99 with "T-Magic" scoring 9 TD's and the defense allowing 1000 yards.  But just a warning, don't tell Coach Bo Pelini we won the game, he might go a little soft on some of these guys this week, when surely they need to be whipped into shape.

Rumors of the Blackshirts’ demise have been greatly exaggerated 16 comments

Slow defensive start par for the course

While Taylor "Tatts" Martinez--I promise you I'll never call him T-Magic--dazzled everyone wearing red on Saturday with his feats and feet of Crouchian proportions, the new "5X Improved!" Blackshirts seemed to get a collective "meh" from most.

Where was the ferocious, throat-ripping attack dog of a defense we remembered from last year? This was Western Kentucky afterall, picked by many as the worst team in all of college football. What were they doing getting one first down, much less 14 of them?

Taylor Martinez Starts as Huskers Top Hilltoppers 21 comments

Nebraska Beats Western Kentucky 49-10

When Bo Pelini said this week that he'd decline to name a starting quarterback to avoid a "media circus" it seemed a bit of a clue. After all, if returning starter Zac Lee were named the top QB, why would there be any hysteria? It took just three plays with Taylor Martinez under center to see why he became the team's new #1. His 46-yard scamper got Nebraska off to a quick 7-0 start after the Blackshirts sent the Hilltopper offense three and out. He connected on a 28-yard pass to Rex Burkhead on NU's second drive to set up a 20-yard Burkhead touchdown run. Both drives were aided by strong field position.

The Weekly Buzz 0 comments

With all the Big Ten news, injury updates, and the excitement of college football officially starting, it's almost easy to forget that Nebraska actually takes the field tomorrow evening for the first game of the season.  That's right, Western Kentucky rolls into town, so it's not really a surprise that there were news bits that overshadowed this week's opponent.  In case you've missed any of the important news of the week, here's what happened, as well as what to look for this weekend.

Scorboard Watching: Thursday Night Lights 1 comment

Here is a quick update for those following future Husker foes. Last night, Idaho vandalized North Dakota, 45-0. Husker Big 12 foe Iowa State beat Northern Illinois, 27-10. Also of some note, Utah beat #15 Pitt in overtime. Surprising, considering Dave Wannstedt is a genius and Pitt AD Steve Pederson exudes excellence.

Linebacker Depth Becoming an Issue 10 comments

It has been a rather injury-filled preseason camp for Nebraska. Before yesterday, NU had lost four players thought to be contributors in 2010, including an offensive lineman (Mike Smith) a linebacker (Sean Fisher), a tight end (Dreu Young) and a cornerback (Anthony Blue). The list appears to have grown by one on Thursday, as Coach Pelini confirmed that linebacker Will Compton will "be out for some time" with an apparent foot injury. The loss of Compton, combined with the earlier injury to Fisher, makes the Huskers suddenly a bit thin at a spot where they were already seeking playmakers.
