Huskers Get Third Commitment for '07 Class

by

demetriousdavis.jpg Sources indicate that NU has received a verbal commitment from Demetrious Davis to play football at NU. The defensive tackle prospect will become the third member of the '07 recruiting class for the Huskers. At first blush, there are a lot of reasons to be happy about Davis' commitment to NU.

For starters, defensive tackle is continually a "need" spot for virtually every team in the country. The ability to find that size and speed combination just makes them rare. And winning the battle up front is essential in any football game. So, other than quarterback, most fans would agree that it is most important to recruit good "big people" - O and D linemen. NU locking one up early for the '07 class is just great!

Next, he appears to have been a productive and disruptive player in HS. Scout.com reports his stats at 70 tackles (12 for loss) and 6 sacks in a 12 game season. It's nice to see production. Every prospect has "upside", including Mr. Davis who has room to grow at 6'4'' and 285. But, for my part, I like to see production in HS.

Who NU beat out for the player is also often a nice "tell" on a kid's potential quality. Davis had offers from many schools, including Iowa from the Big 10 and Alabama from the SEC. Sweeter still, NU beat some conference rivals for his services. Steve considers getting that almost like scoring twice - once for you and a bonus for keeping him from somebody you'll have to play every year. Davis is out of Missouri. So, grabbing a player from MU's state is always sweet. He also had offers from CU and was strongly considering KSU. We just can't beat them enough, in my opinion.

Of course there are the usual caveats on whether he'll qualify and if he'll keep his word. Too bad those are both becoming so common these days. But, for today, we can be happy and hope NU has some recruiting momentum going.
