Callahan Looks Forward to Time Off, Haircut Planned

Bill Callahan had an extra bounce in his step as he walked into the offices at Memorial stadium early Monday morning. “I love everything about coaching here at Nebraska, but sometimes it’s really nice to get away and recharge the batteries”, he said as he prepared for his daily meeting with assistant coaches and weekly appointment with athletic department officials.

“If you never take a break you can burn out, and that can hurt the team”, he explained as he hurriedly finished a takeout breakfast while preparing a PowerPoint presentation for his upcoming coaching clinics.

When asked about his time off, which is scheduled for Sunday afternoon between 1 and 3 pm, Callahan said, “I’m going to get a haircut, but this time I won’t have to spend the whole time on the phone to recruits, I can relax and shoot the breeze with the barber, who’s a White Sox fan like me”. He continued excitedly, as he headed to the film room to examine film of potential recruits, “Maybe he’ll have an old copy of Sports Illustrated from last October, and I can read about the Sox while I wait to get a trim”.

The scheduled break will be the most extended time off for the coach since he spent 90 minutes playing miniature golf with his wife in 2004. “There are a lot of things to take care of when you’re a head coach, but sometimes you have to be a little selfish and make sure you take care of yourself, too”, the coach mentioned as he telephoned his travel agent to make arrangements to visit recruits in Texas, California, and Florida.
