A Major Disappointment

As details have begun trickling out about the charges facing Nebraska defensive back recruit Major Culbert, it seems likely he won’t get to keep the scholarship he was offered in February. There seems little reason to believe the victims’ are lying about the alleged sexual assault and thus, probably only a case of mistaken identity could absolve Major.

Major Culbert Of course, athlete or not, you hate to hear about this kind of thing. But in a purely football sense, it’s a big loss for the secondary. With very few options at safety, and the top cornerbacks likely to graduate in the next two seasons, the Huskers needed every one of the defensive backs in their 2006 class. There was already one big loss when safety Ashlee Palmer bolted to Washington at the last minute rather than delay his transfer from junior college to a Division I program. Now with Culbert likely out of the picture, Nebraska has to hope that the remaining defensive backs pan out.

Questions surround the academic eligibility of Ricky Thenarse, a highly rated recruit. Millard North’s Corey Young is recovering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee and did not play defense in high school. He could choose to play running back at Nebraska. Andre Jones, the top rated cornerback in the junior college ranks, can contribute early but will then likely be gone after two seasons. Anthony West seems a good bet to arrive healthy and qualified but he can only occupy one position and all four defensive back spots could use a long term answer.

The Huskers have already added a safety prospect to the recruiting class of 2007 and you’d expect more defensive backs to be added. Nevertheless, you hate to see a promising young man throw away an opportunity that kid’s all over America dream about (or perhaps suffer for someone else’s misdeed). Instead of being a major player, he appears to be a major disappointment.

Well I sure hope as soon as BC heard the reports he dropped any thought of Major like a clutz holding a mirror walking under a ladder. There is really no excuse for that kind of behavior, keep that kid out of Nebraska.

I have known Major for a long time and i believe that he go himself into a bad situation and unfortunatley for him it will affect his life for a long time, but also you have to stop and look at all sides of this incident. What business did these 2 girls have inviting high school kids into their dorms in the first place?!!

I don't think a single incident defines one's character, but neither do I think it's appropriate to blame the victims.
