Open Thread Friday - Is NU's defense any good?

Editors Note: When they aren't busy writing stories for the BRN, our writers spend their time on lots of other hobbies, like debating Husker football amongst themselves in email. (You can't say they aren't dedicated.) When they weren't looking, I posted their latest give-and-take here for your enjoyment. Feel free to jump into the fray in the comments.
Steve: I might just be drinking the Big Red Kool-Aid but I see a lot of playmaking ability on that offense next year between Glenn, Lucky, Herian, Mueller, Nunn, and Purify. Taylor should have the weapons, he just needs the big guys to give him time (which I think they can and will do).
Darren: True 'dat. And, let's not forget the best part - a top 10 defense.
Providing we have all the parts right on the backend (Safties ready to play, and a 3rd corner) NU could have one of those defenses that only needs 17-20 points out of the offense in order to win most games. And, with the weapons you mentioned, I would hope that would be an easy standard to meet!
Steve: I'm not penciling in a top 10 defense yet. Our safeties could be worse than the group that allowed 400+ yards to Kansas and Missouri.
Our defensive tackles probably won't be as good either. Our punting may drop off giving our opponents a shorter field.
Yes the DE's, CB's, and LB's will likely all be better but an injury to McKeon, Carriker, Grixby, Bowman, Octavien, or Moore could make things net out as the same or worse at those spots. I'm also still not 100% sold on Cosgrove. We'll see.
That's why they play the games. Hopefully our offense can set up the defense better too.
Darren: Safeties - worse than Tiedke? Naw... Though, it is my chief area of concern. And a 3rd CB.
DT's - better, both at the starters and in total depth. Here me now, believe me later.
LB's - rock solid.
DE's - best in the country.
Quit hating on Coz. He may not be McBride, but he's sure not Bohl.
Bet you a 6-pack NU is in the top 10 in total defense next year. (Baised on end of regular season, pre-bowl game rankings) Yes, I know how ludicrous that sounds. But, I'm putting my $ where my pie hole is. You game?
Steve: You're on. It's a bet I'm eager to lose!
