In the wake of a recruiting scandal that ultimately (albeit belatedly) lead to the termination of Gary Barnett from the University of Colorado, charges of new recruiting violations have surfaced that could halt the Dan Hawkins era at CU before it even begins.

Unnamed sources, believed to be neighbors of CU head coach Dan Hawkins have confirmed that 2006 quarterback recruit Cody Hawkins has been receiving illegal enticements from the coach to play quarterback at CU. These sources report that Coach Hawkins has been providing free housing for several months (and perhaps much longer) to Cody Hawkins and the boy’s mother.

“They don’t even try to hide it. In fact, they invited the whole neighborhood over when they moved in and all three were there, the coach, the player and the player’s mother.” said one source. “But wait,” they continued, “it gets better. Coach Hawkins and the boy’s mother are having an affair and they’re both married.”

While free housing is clearly an NCAA violation that could mean suspension of coaches, scholarships, and bowl game bans, the rules are less clear when it comes to dating between coaches and family members of athletes. Nevertheless, it can’t be good for Coach Hawkins or the school.

Another source sympathized, “You can understand how it might happen, she’s married to a guy that works long hours and travels a lot and he presents himself as almost a father figure to her pride and joy”.

Even if Hawkins was looking to gain an edge in recruiting the young man, chances are the relationship with the mother evolved naturally. Said one source, “I’m not sure a coach is going to prostitute himself for the 17th rated quarterback in the country. A top rated QB? Definitely.”

Even if investigations reveal that the housing was legitimate, there are other concerns that could land the program in hot water. Said one source, “There’s definitely been illegal contact between the coach and the player. The coach has been at that house every day, even during the recruiting dead period.” Another charged the Coach with holding extra practice sessions, “I’ve seen him doing drills, you know, tossing a football in the back yard with the boy”.

When called for comment, Coach Hawkins denied the charges becoming hostile, “You can’t be serious. I don’t have time for this, you idiot.”
