Leon Sticking Around After All

by

Leon Jackson
Surprise, Leon Jackson isn't leaving after all. What does that mean? In an earlier story, I dissected the repercussions of a talented player like Leon Jackson leaving the team. Everything said there remains true. You always want as many talented players as possible on your team. So, this is great. Those players are always going to want to play. So, when the talent quotient should be so high that even talented players have to compete or leave (a la Blankenship). And, you want depth at a vital position like I-back. Those are true whether he stays or goes. So, what is important about his choice to stay? His age, a jog down memory lane, and...numerology?

He's a kid

From what I can tell, Leon just changed his mind. He got more reassurance from NU's coaches. And, he had a couple of people telling him he needs to grow up (parents, HS coach). Sometimes we get so enamored with these players that we forget vital element - they are kids. Leon is only 19 years old. Remember being 19? Ever make rash choices or do things you regret? Yeah... And, kudos to Callahan and his staff for being willing to take him back and do so graciously. This is hopefully still a little bit about developing young men for life. Of course, how hard is it to welcome back a stud talent? Not a tough choice, folks.

Pulling an Eric Crouch

In case you forgot, this same thing happened with a "star" player under Solich. Faced with playing behind Bobby Newcombe, Crouch supposedly quit the team and returned to Millard. Frank proceeded to let him back on the team. And, we know how that turned out for both player and coach. Though, I don't suspect Callahan will run 80% of NU's offense through Leon the way Solich did Crouch.

Numerology anyone?

In case you didn't notice in the Spring Game, Leon now wears #31 after his recent switch to offense. (Chris Brooks wears #23 on offense, Leon's number while on D). Anyone remember the last I-back to wear #31? I do. It was Jay Simms. Yep, a talented and fast I-back who could not get on the field because he was behind a slew of other backs (that, and he avoided contact like the plague). If Leon knew this about #31, do you think he would change numbers? All of my jersey/numerology stuff is a little tongue in cheek. But think of #30s and #7s in NU's past, and you get the drift. Also, players buy in to it. Octavian wears #15 because it was Tommie Frazier's number. I'm just saying...

Regardless, welcome back Leon. I hope Callahan is right and that your best days are in front of you. Whether it's at I-back, or flanker, or safety, or kick returner...just do it in scarlet and cream.
