Solich Recruiting 2.0

The sky is falling crowd would have you quake about KSU stealing two guys out of Nebraska the last two years (2-star McCook defensive back Tony Purvis and now McCook placekicker Josh Cherry). Of course, neither kid has been offered by Nebraska. Should we worry?

Well, it would be nice for these kids to walk-on at Nebraska, but it’s probably not reasonable to think with the high cost of post-secondary education that you can expect a kid to turn down a full ride. It’s kind of funny how things have changed.

In the Solich/Snyder era, kids like Purvis and Cherry could very well get scholarships to Nebraska while KSU would grab the top shelf JC talent from Kansas (e.g. Zac Taylor, Justin Tomerlin, Frantz Hardy, Barry Cryer, Dontrell Moore, and Kenny Wilson). Who would your rather have on your team? Give me those studs from Butler, Coffeyville, and Dodge City and KSU can take every kid from McCook they want.

Need I mention that Solich’s record vs. Snyder was a stellar 2-4 (and the two wins came with Osborne recruits)? I’m not quaking just yet.

Another way to look at it is to forget about these particular kids but point out KSU has 7 commits (as of this writing) for 2007 to NU’s 1 (Niles Paul, who is the only 2007 commit for either school that Scout gives more than one star to right now). KSU did score a nice LB that NU had offered from Missouri (and who can forget Mr. Text Message from the 2006 class)). None of the other 6 commits in KSU's 2007 class appear to have offers from NU.

Considering how “not special” a few of these kids seem, I almost get the sense that Prince is a little panicked. It’s almost as if he’s expecting a horrible season and wants to lock kids (any kids) in before the carnage we’ll see in the Fall. Not a terrible strategy and perhaps not all that different from what BC did in year 0 and year 1 but what do you gain by locking in a McCook kid now?

Was USC or Texas going to sweep in and take this kid away? Is he that much better than any of a dozen other kickers that would have been available in the Fall or Winter? Maybe he thinks he won’t get caught in a numbers crunch where he’s sitting with more kids to take than slots available. But that’s almost expecting to fail.

Maybe Cherry is the next Grammatica, but really I feel like we’re seeing Solich Recruiting 2.0, only this time in Manhattan.
