Jumping the Gunn
Harland Gunn is an offensive lineman from Omaha Central that has committed to Miami's 2007 class (their first commit). No doubt there are a lot of Husker fans with their panties in a bunch about this kid committing to Miami. To them I say, "chill out" for a number of reasons:
- It's a long time until signing day. The home squad has plenty of time to make a run at him.
- He's not all that, if you believe the recruiting web sites. He could easily be a 4-star guy, but you wouldn't know it by looking at Rivals or Scout. Scout (as of this writing) shows 3 5-star offensive lineman and 14 4-star offensive lineman. Gunn is not among them. Wide receiver Niles Paul on the other hand (already committed to NU) gets 4 stars from Scout. Going by those sites, Niles is probably a better recruit and NU got him.
- Gunn's not the first offensive lineman Nebraska offered (again a sign that he's not all that). They offered a 4-star offensive lineman from Littleton, CO. The Coloradan leans to CU but Nebraska is in the hunt and was the first to offer. NU only offered Gunn after Miami did.
- The kid took an unofficial visit to Miami, which I believe means he bought his own plane ticket. That means he likely either had someone to visit down there (so maybe he's more of a local to Miami than people realize) or took a vacation. A vacation to Miami from Omaha in late February or early March is bound to make Miami look good. (Though I thought the big guys liked the cold to keep from sweating).
- NU may not play Miami in the next 4-5 years, so at least we don't have to face the guy four times if he does turn out to be a great one.
