Analyzing Spring Game Attendance

Spring practice is behind us. That means we have four whole months to gaze at our navels before the season starts. What better way to pass the time than to...oh I don't know...analyze attendance at the spring games. Yeah, that's it! (Hey, it's better than watching hockey.)

We here at the BRN, put our research assistants on the case (thanks Mom!) and they came up with this graphic that clearly shows that Husker fans kick ass!

Or does it?

Yeah, it does. That's just a little trick I used to get you to click over from the front page. You'll thank me later.

Over 57,000 Husker fans showed up at Memorial Stadium on Tax Day to watch practice. That dedication is second only to Ohio State where they filled The Shoe with 63,000 nuts.

Had the North Stadium not been under renovation, there is no telling how many Cornheads would have packed the house. (Probably at least as many as last year (63,000) which would have tied us with Ohio State.) I guess you have to put up with a little dust when you are installing a 117 foot big screen in your rec room.

What other lessons can be learned from this data?

The Big 12 faired well taking six of the top twenty spots and five of the top ten.

Some critics in sunnier climates might argue that "there's nothing else to do in those places but watch college football." To that I would say, "Eh, maybe." But how do you explain 45,200 Florida fans showing up for a Spring Game? USC even squeaked into the top 20 and I hear there are a few distractions in southern California. Maybe they are in denial over their last game and are gearing up for a four-peat!?

Here is what I think. The best fans show their dedication all year round. This is especially true in the spring when they have one chance to see their team in uniform before they are relegated to watching hockey and baseball all summer.

Look at the teams that made the top 20. Without exception they are all known for having very loyal fan bases.

Does any of this matter?

What do you think was going through the heads of those 70 recruits that were on the sideline April 15th when the Huskers walked through the tunnel and met 57,000 screaming fanatics in the stands?

Do you have info on what if anything the schools charge for the spring games?

Jason Sep 15 06

Hi Ted,

Nebraska charged $6 ($3 for seniors). I'm not sure what anyone else charged though. I will have to add that to my research for next spring. :)

Thanks for stopping by.
